The group here is of Charles Richard John Spencer Churchill, the 9th Duke of Marlborough and his family. The Duke was a cousin of Winston Churchill, who was second in line for the coronet until Charles married Consuelo Vanderbilt of the United States and produced an heir. In this sitting, the family has added a second son. According to the John Singer Sargent Virtual Gallery, this painting was commissioned as a companion piece to a similar sitting of the 4th Duke, painted by Reynolds (a print of which will be offered by Harper’s at a future date).
